All you need to know about Skin Pigmentation its causes and treatment All you need to know about Skin Pigmentation its causes and treatment

We often believe that “Everything happens for a reason” and so is skin pigmentation. It happens for a reason and we will discuss it in detail in this article. Do read it till the end, you will probably take away more than you expect.

Let us understand what Skin Pigmentation is?
Skin Pigmentation is a condition in which our skin becomes darker or lighter due to changes in our body’s melanin production.

Now, What is melanin?
In simple words, Melanin is a substance that is responsible for your unique eye, hair, and skin colour. There are generally three types of melanin: Eumelanin, Pheomelanin, and neuromelanin. Breaking down further, Eumelanin is brown and black and it protects your skin by limiting UV rays. Pheomelanin is red and yellow; it provides less protection from UV rays and supports the production of reactive oxygen radicals and the damage they cause. The third type of melanin is Neuromelanin which determines the color of the neurons. When it comes to skin, we are majorly concerned with the first two kinds of melanin i.e Eumelanin and Pheomelanin. The balance of these types of melanin determines your skin pigmentation.

If you tend to have darker skin, it is generally because your skin produces more melanin.

Are you aware of the types of skin pigmentation?
Skin Pigmentation is of three types: Hyperpigmentation, Hypopigmentation, and
Depigmentation. Most commonly known to us is Hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation is a condition that causes the skin to become darker or forms dark patches over your body due to the high-level production of melanin in the skin. It is generally caused by sun exposure, acne scars, exposure to technology, birthmarks, etc. Whereas Hypopigmentation and Depigmentation are the conditions where the skin becomes lighter or forms white patches of your skin. The only difference between the two is that depigmentation happens when your skin turns white and completely loses pigment.

But wait, What causes skin pigmentation?
Skin Pigmentation happens due to sun exposure, your genetics, your scars, and blemishes, if you are on heavy doses of medication, Hormonal Imbalance, and medical conditions such as polycystic ovary disease (PCOD), Hypothyroidism.
It also occurs due to the overuse of perfumes, using harsh skin care products, less water intake, using steroids, not getting enough sleep, stress, anxiety, etc. are the major causes of skin pigmentation.

Today, there is an unsaid fashion of going into laser treatment as it is painless, however, there are possibilities that it can cause you more pigmentation than before. It is recommended to do it under the supervision of dermatologists.
